Can Residential Reverse Osmosis Systems do

Here we compare the four options, to help you make an informed decision.

The threat, in this case, is cyst contamination. Cryptosporidium and giardia cysts may be present in tap water. If ingested, they grow inside the intestinal tract and cause illness. But, those with weakened or poorly function immune systems can die from the infection.

The quality of reverse osmosis systems residential units vary, but those that remove anything larger than 1 micron will remove the cysts. Other purifiers use a multi-media block with a sub-micron filter to do the same thing, while removing chlorine, THMs and other chemical contaminants.

Residential reverse osmosis systems must have an additional carbon filtration step to remove even chlorine. THMs and other gaseous contaminants are only removed through a process called adsorption.

Cysts threaten an individual's present health and reverse osmosis systems residential designs will remove that threat. THM exposure threatens their future health and residential reverse osmosis systems will not remove that threat.

THMs are known to cause cancer and they are present in any water supply disinfected with chlorine. Exposure can occur due to drinking, showering, brushing teeth and even from a pot of unfiltered boiling water. So, that should cross the boiling option off the list.

Pregnant women, in particular, should avoid exposure to THMs and chlorinated drinking water. Researchers have shown that chlorine and/or THM (they aren't sure which just yet) increases the risk of miscarriage, premature birth and birth defects. Lead contamination is another concern, particularly for pregnant women, infants and children.

If you buy only bottled water, you could still be exposed to THMs in other ways. If the bottling company does not use sub-micron filtration, cysts and other contaminants can still be present in bottled water. They are something like eggs. Their hard shell protects them from nearly anything and they are too small to be removed by most types of filtration. If you do decide to go the bottled route, you should call the manufacturer and ask them what type of purification system they use.

For homeowners, there are really only two options; reverse osmosis systems residential purifiers and sub-micron particle filtration. Sub-micron particle filtration cost less than residential reverse osmosis systems and the best quality multi-stage units will remove a wider range of contaminants.
