The reverse osmosis process was first developed for the printing industry many years ago, as there was a need for mineral free water and this technology was able to provide that. As the home water filtration market heated up, manufacturers started offering reverse osmosis systems for residential use.
Although it certainly does improve upon tap water, removing many harmful chemicals, there are three major problems with this type of water filtration:
1.They cannot effectively remove synthetic chemicals (pesticides, herbicides, etc.), as most of them are molecularly smaller than water. They can only filter out those contaminants that are larger than water.
2. They are extremely inefficient. Not only do they leave smaller toxins in the water, they also leave a lot of water behind, wasting 2-3 gallons for every gallon they produce.
3. Perhaps worst of all, they de-mineralize the water, taking out important trace elements such as calcium, magnesium and potassium that our bodies need. The reason water is so healthful is due in part to the natural elements it contains...a reverse osmosis system removes all of them.
So you can see why this process is not ideal for home water filtration. You are much better off with a unit that can remove all contaminants both small and large, while leaving essential minerals behind so you can reap the health benefits of water.
Although some companies continue to sell reverse osmosis systems, often accompanied by unsubstantiated claims of performance, they are not as popular as they once were for obvious reasons. They have been replaced by more efficient, more effective multi-stage filtration units that can outperform the RO units and provide years of clean, pure, healthy water.
