The R&S SML Series combines allthe characteristics of a general purpose signal generator - widefrequency ranges, extensive analog modulation capabilities and highreliability - into a lightweight, low-cost product.Thanks to its lowphase noise SML is ideally suited to replace Los, and with preciseDC-coupled FM modulation the SML can be used as an accurate VCO. TheSML in conjunction with the optional Pulse Modulator SML-B3 handles allanalog types of modulation. AM, FM/phase and pulse modulation can beused simultaneously. TDMA signals or amplitude variations at FM, forexample, can thus be simulated. The SML has plenty of power in reserveso level loss produced by the test setup can be easily compensated. Itshigh output level makes SML an ideal source for driving high-levelmixers. Production test systems, in which the signal is taken to theDUT via switches and cables, cause level losses which can be easilycompensated by the high output power of SML.Sensitivity measurementsrequire a signal generator with high level accuracy. This isparticularly true at low output levels. With its sophisticatedcalibration technique, SML features high level accuracy (error <0.5dB at levels >-120 dBm). Squelch measurements call for continuouslevel setting. Non-interrupting level variation by typically 30 dBmakes SML the ideal choice for squelch measurements. Protection againstovervoltage - The integrated overvoltage protection of SML protectsagainst very high external voltages as they may occur duringtransceiver measurements.The SML Series provides high accuracy and fastsettling. In production testing, compliance with specified tolerancesis checked. The tolerance range is further limited by the inaccuracy ofthe measuring equipment used. Thanks to its high level accuracy of<0.5 dB (at levels >-120 dBm) SML reduces the accuracyrequirements made on the DUT. This results in higher yield. Speed is ofprime importance in production. And this is exactly one of the strongpoints of SML, with a setting time <10 ms for frequency andlevel.Simultaneous modulation - TDMA signals can be simulated since SMLoffers simultaneous AM, FM/phase and pulse modulation.
