Test procedure
By means of the paper marking-out patern the spots of impact are marked at a distance of ¼” = 6.35 mm within the area to be tested.
The test device HFP is tightened by pushing the tightening bolt into the semicircle cavity of the fixture and aligned by means of the pointer marks and the three-point support of the foot ring in between two marks opposite to each other.
By pushing the release lever the hammer jerks on the the test area leaving a linear indentation. According to the order of the marks (¼”) the test has to to be repeated.
If there aren’t any cracks on the zinc coating despite the high thrust the adhesive strength the is considered to be good.
According to ASTM A 123-59 the test must consist of two or more impacts resulting in parallel indentations on an axis at a distance of 6.35 mm. The impact must not be closer than 12.7 mm to the edge of the test object.
Crackin off or coming off of the coating in between the indentations points out a faulty zincing whereas a fin having a width smaller than 1.6 mm doesn’t need to be considered.
The test object has to be tested on several spots on the overall length. In case the test object shows bad test results, other test objects of the same type have to be tested. If the test results are also bad on the second and third test object the whole delivery must be rejected.
If you only want some information on the adhesive strength, the indentations can be done by eye at a distance of your choice.
HINT: Never release the hammer without any resistance !!
